Burials

Monuments

The placement of a monument and/or footstone can be arranged at any time after burial, and traditionally should be placed before the first anniversary of passing. A minimum six-week period will be required to arrange for the selection, ordering, engraving, and delivery of a monument and/or footstone. Once the monument is ordered, the monument maker will coordinate with Yosi Even-Hen, Ritual Director, for verification of the Hebrew text, as well as with the cemetery office to schedule the placement of the monument foundation and the installation. Click the link below for the list of monument makers who have installed monuments in the Shaar Cemetery.

Unveilings

Please contact the Rabbi’s office at 514.937.9474 ext. 143 once you have made arrangements with the monument maker. He will coordinate the unveiling schedule with both clergy and cemetery staff. Please note that only scheduled unveilings will have the monument covered in preparation for the unveiling ceremony.

Flowers, Perennials, Trees, and Shrubs

The Shaar Cemetery is distinguished not only because it is on top of Mount Royal, but also because its beauty is enhanced by the variety of flowers, trees, and landscaping options that serve as a dignified and beautiful tribute to the memory of your loved ones. Annual flowers can be planted throughout the summer and arranged as a yearly standing order or through a perpetual care contract.

Tribute Flower Pots

Tribute pots are available on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and before Rosh Hashanah. Tribute pots can be arranged on a standing order basis, but please note only a limited amount are available in the cemetery office for visitors to purchase.

Monument Cleaning

The Shaar Cemetery also offers a monument cleaning service to renew the look of older monuments and footstones. The process removes discoloration due to soot, pollution, moss, lichens, etc. For more information please contact Stewart Leibovitch or 514-937-9474 ext. 171.
